Très redondant, mais le Secret fonctionne et vous surprendra!
By Duff Milito
Il y a quelques années j’ai vu le film, aussi paru en 2006, qui était plutôt intéressant. Je me suis dit « Pourquoi pas? ».

If you only want to use one book, this is it
By David C.
This is obviously the must-have book to prepare for your SWE/SDE interview. I have some small quibbles with how some of the problems were worded, but the level of difficulty is very representative of what the big tech companies are using. You might even run into these questions in your own interviews since Gayle is choosing questions that are popular among interviewers today. If you have time, you should of course pick up an algorithms textbook also. I recommend Skiena's The Algorithm Design Manual and Sedgewick's Algorithms (4th Edition) textbooks. The classic Cormen is too verbose and proof-heavy for the purposes of preparing for an interview.

The DP solutions in this book are not actually tabular DP formulations--I recommend looking at the problems here http://people.cs.clemson.edu/~bcdean/dp_practice/ (Brian Dean's Dynamic Programming Practice Problems). Gayle presents memoized solutions, which are much easier conceptually but not as clean or performant as bottoms-up tabular solutions.

If (readThisBook) { $percentGettingJob = 99.999%; }
By John Mangahas
This book alone was/is the reason I was hired at my current job. I repeatedly would get to the last round and then lose out on the hiring. The feedback was always that I needed to sharpen up on solving questions or I wasn't quick enough in my answers. I am a 10+ years software engineer and am very far removed from college level questions which many interviewers tend to ask. No matter how much you think it is unnecessary for the job at hand, these are questions that help the interviewers find out how you think and solve questions (and also figure out your personality and fit with the team). With that said, this book helped me figure out the EXTRA step in finding the correct answers. Every interview question has multiple correct answers, and it is up to you to find the best answer in the quickest amount of time. I was floored to see every question I was asked in previous interviews were exactly or very very similar to the questions in this book. I super highly recommend reading this book before starting your job search. Good luck!

Great but needs a kindle/ebook format
By mtn rider
This book helped me land a job at well known internet company. I got several offers and without doubt this book helped. The specific coding questions that I would have failed outright on had I not read the book include: breadth first search/shortest path, fundamentals of hash tables, and recursion (fibonacci). Before reading this book I thought I understood recursion but there's a lot I hadn't considered. I worked through many of the code exercises and would review some of the chapters before interviews, including big-O. There are some areas that I feel deserve more attention, like heaps, but overall it covers most of the fundamentals. There are some typos which I found annoying.

The only reason I can't give 5 stars is this should be available in a ebook format. I don't buy physical books anymore since it's just a pain to lug around/store and as a result, they are often forgotten. And I've loaned this book to so many people they're really losing money buy not offering it on Kindle, which I would not be able to share.

Universe twisting technology and threats abound
By Mike Nemeth
Vaughn Heppner in "The Lost Patrol" continues to move the saga of Captain Maddox into new directions, introducing new characters and enemies. As if our captain didn't have enough trouble already. The fifth volume of the Lost Starship Series begins with Maddox making a free fall into space just for kicks. But this is Maddox, a guy who's half New Man and has saved the earth from certain annihilation. Immediately he's set upon by two separate assassination teams and meets up with the Spacers, a secretive and highly technically capable group rumored to have ties to the mysterious Builders. He meets an old woman Spacer, the Visionary, and she dubs him the "di-far," which means something like a playmaker in the universe. Maddox then takes on Shu 15, a Spacer he rescues. She's very thankful for her life and seems devoted, at first. But like all Heppner stories, there's more going on in the background. Allies can turn, and Shu 15 once tried to kill him in a past book in the series. This time Maddox sets out on probably his least favorite assignment with the ancient alien-built ship and its AI Galyan. He must find the dreaded Swarm Imperium. Maddox brings the professor, who hates Shu. Heppner creates all sorts of conflict, and it appears many times that this may be the final voyage of Maddox and crew. The threats and challenges pose a tremendous barrier to the mission's success, and the androids, who tried to kill Maddox early on in this volume, remain a threat. Maddox and company get little aid. What I enjoy most is how this motley crew pull a semblance of success from near impossible odds, and Heppner puts his imagination into overdrive to make Maddox's journey one hell of a ride.

too many derivative concepts, offset by very good writing and decent character development
By Robert Shuler
One star removed for doubling down on the insectoid theme (there are two of them now), and punting on the Builders. There is some development of the hero, though he becomes too cocky, and there might be a hint of development in Luddendorf. Or maybe not. We'll see. That would be interesting. Also a hint of development among the robots, however this much is very Asimovian and therefore derivative, with two factions of robots, one sometimes "helping" humans but remaining secret, etc. However, the other faction is non-Asimovian (neither explained nor very interesting, either). Some loose ends as the fate of the kidnapped engineer in the prologue is never revealed. And the fate of the Builders is right out of StarGate SG-1. The writing, however, is as good as the first in the series, very entertaining, so I gave it a positive rating.

A Must Read Story: Great Action, Deeper Lore, and a good dose of humor :)
By John R. Heritage Jr.
Five stars for me. The writing continues to improve; This 5th book in the series has a great balance of humor mixed in with serious story and action. There is continued character building of a few of the main characters, with substantial insertions of other important actors. The best part is a significant broadening of scope and lore for the Lost Starship Series universe. I tend to 'savor' books over time but this 5th installment I could not put down*.

This is a great book in a great series; Let's hope Vaughn Heppner is a Methuselah man so this can continue for a while :).

* For reference and comparison, (months later) I am still struggling to get started with the 4th book in the Expanse series.

Seven Fires: Grilling the Argentine Way, by Francis Mallmann^Peter Kaminsky

A trailblazing chef reinvents the art of cooking over fire.

Gloriously inspired recipes push the boundaries of live-fired cuisine in this primal yet sophisticated cookbook introducing the incendiary dishes of South America's biggest culinary star. Chef Francis Mallmann―born in Patagonia and trained in France's top restaurants―abandoned the fussy fine dining scene for the more elemental experience of cooking with fire. But his fans followed, including the world's top food journalists and celebrities, such as Francis Ford Coppola, Madonna, and Ralph Lauren, traveling to Argentina and Uruguay to experience the dashing chef's astonishing―and delicious―wood-fired feats.

The seven fires of the title refer to a series of grilling techniques that have been singularly adapted for the home cook. So you can cook Signature Mallmann dishes―like Whole Boneless Ribeye with Chimichuri; Salt-Crusted Striped Bass; Whole Roasted Andean Pumpkin with Mint and Goat Cheese Salad; and desserts such as Dulce de Leche Pancakes―indoors or out in any season. Evocative photographs showcase both the recipes and the exquisite beauty of Mallmann's home turf in Patagonia, Buenos Aires, and rural Uruguay. Seven Fires is a must for any griller ready to explore food's next frontier.

Review
"Most of what's in this captivating book about cooking over wood is as straightforward as it is appealing."
-The New York Times

(The New York Times)

"Glorious...You could amuse yourself all summer long exploring Mallmann's methods. His cooking is utterly unpretentious."
-Fine Cooking
(The New York Times Book Review)

"[Mallmann] cooks with the elegant purity achieved only after attaining a mastery of complicated food."
(Publishers Weekly)

"Mallmann cooks with the elegant purity achieved only after attaining a mastery of complicated food.  I craved Mallmann’s burnt flavors, from caramelized oranges with rosemary to flattened sweet potatoes charred in butter.  Bobby Flay, be very afraid." ―Christine Muhlke
(Epicurious.com)

"[Mallmann] reconnects us to the primal simplicity and visceral pleasure of cooking over a fire."

"Argentinean chef Francis Mallmann presents a gorgeous volume detailing seven approaches to grilling.  What will keep cooks coming back, however, are rustic dishes like burnt tomatoes with fennel and mustard vinaigrette; pork chops with honey gremolata; and boneless ribeye with chimichurri.  Augmented with plenty of smoky photos, the only thing readers will lack is the smell of charcoal." *STARRED REVIEW

"Seven Fires is, in its essence, a love letter to Argentina's obsession with fire and food."

From the Inside Flap
From first spark to leaping flame to last dying ember, grilling has a new frontier and Francis Mallmann is its trailblazer. He offers more than one hundred recipes, ranging from griddled mussels to a whole salmon that s salt-roasted to juicy perfection, from beautifully burnt tomatoes to crunchy smashed potatoes and lusciously charred oranges, from a butterflied leg of lamb that cooks in just minutes to if you can imagine a whole cow that roasts for fourteen hours! He also shares the secret to perfect steak every single time.
Born in Patagonia, Mallmann grew up in the Andes, in a house where everything from the heating to the hot water to the kitchen stove was sustained by ever-burning fires. As a true prodigy, he trained in the greatest French kitchens and went on to become South America s most venerated chef. But at age forty he had an epiphany. He was, in his words, "tired of making fancy French food for wealthy customers in Buenos Aires." In an audacious move, he abandoned the fussy fine-dining scene to return to his roots and the language he describes in his mother tongue: fire.
Mallmann calls his techniques the Seven Fires and all are represented in this book, with some extras thrown in for good measure. In glorious photographs, Mallmann illustrates technique after technique, from "parrilla" which is cooking on a grill to his boldest method, "asador," in which a butterflied spring lamb or pig is fastened to an iron cross, where it cooks for hours in the glow of live coals.
A TV star in South America, Mallmann is a showman who adores cooking for a crowd he s served presidents, princes, and celebrities as diverse as Madonna and Francis Ford Coppola. "Seven Fires" is filled with food that anyone can prepare with little equipment beyond a heat source whether it s wood, charcoal, or gas fire. Signature dishes include Smashed Patagonian Lamb with Lemon Confit and Herbs; Salt-Baked Striped Bass; Boneless Pork Chops with Honey Gremolata; and Whole Andean Pumpkin Salad with Mint, Arugula, and Goat Cheese as well as a surefire recipe for the perfect steak. And because we can t always cook outdoors year-round, indoor variations are given for nearly all the recipes.
With evocative photos that showcase Mallmann s food and the exquisite beauty of his home turf, "Seven Fires" will thrill grillers ready to explore the magic of fire, fine food s next frontier.

Before you buy this, think about your backyard and your lifestyle
By I Do The Speed Limit
This cookbook is exciting to read. If you like fire and like to grill outdoors, it really gets your brain thinking creatively. I bought it many, many months ago, and while I've not been able to use a single recipe from it, the book still has me thinking....thinking about how I can get this method of cooking to work in my yard!

Positive: The author's view on "the taste of burnt" alone will have you rethinking your grilling philosophy and tweaking your techniques. (Think of "burnt" as another positive facet of the food's taste and appearance.) Just thinking about the "Life of a Fire"--flames, coals, embers, ashes and cinders--will open your eyes to the possible ways that these stages can be utilized in the cooking process.

Positive/Negative: Indoor alternatives are provided to grilling the Argentine Way outdoors. You will need a WELL-ventilated kitchen. And the indoor alternatives are really not that exciting....(like cooking in a cast iron pan on the stove).

Negative: Unless you have a large untended yard, or live in a rural area on the edge of a forest or large field, the relatively simple techniques described will require a fairly elaborate set-up. The chapter "The Ways of Fire" threw up roadblocks for me, and I bet, will do so for most of you who live in established neighborhoods. For me, reading those few pages was like dosing a beautiful roaring fire with buckets of cold water. The book instructs you to: Use hardwood--chip-size up to 6"-9" in diameter and not less than 16" long; keep the fire away from buildings, fences and overhangs; avoid paved areas, lawns and underground piping; build a ring of large stones or have made a customized metal fire ring; find a solid, large solid piece of metal to use as a grill top; find a large grill grate, and build a structure to get your cooktops off the ground, and, hey, watch the wind direction, too. I've estimated that I need at least 8 square feet in which to set up my fire pit--if I want to do this correctly. And I can't find a place in our very large yard to put this whole scenario together: I've got to have a place to store the wood and then get it to the fire pit without too much effort; the fire pit can't be located under a tree; it can't be on top of underground pipe; I'm going to have to give up some grass, and then, when the fire is out, I've got to get rid of a big pile of ash.

So if you have a small manicured lawn, or no yard at all, or a poorly ventilated kitchen you may end up very frustrated if you buy this book! But if you do a lot of camping or picnicing out in the wild, or can find even a small place to burn on the ground in your yard, I bet you will be able to realize some value from this cookbook.

So good I cooked a WHOLE COW and Lambs!
By Jeff Bannister
I think this book is one of the funnest and most informative cook books I have ever read. Me and some friends are getting together on April 15th and roasting a whole cow, 5 lambs and a whole goat.
I just love everything about this book and it's principles. I do wish they would include temps. with the recipes but we are going to make due.
I hope to have video review soon.

UPDATE: We cooked a whole cow this past weekend. It was a big hit. The cow did catch on fire three times and the weather was horrible. We cooked through the storm that spawned 150 tornados and killed 45 people while dumping rain. We built a cover for the cow and fought it all night long but it was great. We also cooked 4 lambs and a goat ASADO. A local welder and engineer helped with the constrution. We had 3300lbs of concrete to hold the cow rack that was made from 1900lbs of steel. I wish I could post pictures on amazon. We had 5 beautiful Lamb Racks made. It was a very intense but great 36 hours of cooking.

If you are on facebook you can search for "Bovinova" we had a band, bouncy houses for the kids and a live web cam to broadcast the event. Also you can search for Bovinova on Google and find many pictures.

I love the book and I am ready to do this again as the meat was wonderful as was the company.

While good cooking stimulates the senses
By Robert L. Bridges
While good cooking stimulates the senses, great cooking stimulates the imagination. This book is a sumptuous feast for the eyes, the intellect and the imagination. The book feeds the imagination from anticipation to fulfillment. Argentinians take their food seriously, especially meat. Mallmann opens the door to trying age old concepts of fire to bring great cuisine to your table. The best steak I ever had was at an estancia on the Pampas for lunch! Argentinian cuisine is a blend of Old and New World. Step-by-step one is introduced to the simple approach to cooking with that primal force... fire. From this, complex yet traditional tastes are created. Enjoy!!

A NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLER

"I was born at the beginning of it all, on the Red side―the Communist side―of the Iron Curtain." Through annotated illustrations, journals, maps, and dreamscapes, Peter Sís shows what life was like for a child who loved to draw, proudly wore the red scarf of a Young Pioneer, stood guard at the giant statue of Stalin, and believed whatever he was told to believe. But adolescence brought questions. Cracks began to appear in the Iron Curtain, and news from the West slowly filtered into the country. Sís learned about beat poetry, rock 'n' roll, blue jeans, and Coca-Cola. He let his hair grow long, secretly read banned books, and joined a rock band. Then came the Prague Spring of 1968, and for a teenager who wanted to see the world and meet the Beatles, this was a magical time. It was short-lived, however, brought to a sudden and brutal end by the Soviet-led invasion. But this brief flowering had provided a glimpse of new possibilities―creativity could be discouraged but not easily killed.

By joining memory and history, Sís takes us on his extraordinary journey: from infant with paintbrush in hand to young man borne aloft by the wings of his art. This title has Common Core connections.

The Wall is a 2007 New York Times Book Review Best Illustrated Book of the Year, a 2008 Caldecott Honor Book, a 2008 Bank Street - Best Children's Book of the Year, the winner of the 2008 Boston Globe - Horn Book Award for Nonfiction, and a nominee for the 2008 Eisner Award for Best Publication for Kids.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Born out of a question posed to Sís (Play, Mozart, Play!) by his children (Are you a settler, Dad?), the author pairs his remarkable artistry with journal entries, historical context and period photography to create a powerful account of his childhood in Cold War–era Prague. Dense, finely crosshatched black-and-white drawings of parades and red-flagged houses bear stark captions: Public displays of loyalty—compulsory. Children are encouraged to report on their families and fellow students. Parents learn to keep their opinions to themselves. Text along the bottom margin reveals young Sís's own experience: He didn't question what he was being told. Then he found out there were things he wasn't told. The secret police, with tidy suits and pig faces, intrude into every drawing, watching and listening. As Sís grows to manhood, Eastern Europe discovers the Beatles, and the Prague Spring of 1968 promises liberation and freedom. Instead, Soviet tanks roll in, returning the city to its previous restrictive climate. Sís rebels when possible, and in the book's final spreads, depicts himself in a bicycle, born aloft by wings made from his artwork, flying toward America and freedom, as the Berlin Wall crumbles below. Although some of Sís's other books have their source in his family's history, this one gives the adage write what you know biting significance. Younger readers have not yet had a graphic memoir with the power of Maus or Persepolis to call their own, but they do now. Ages 8-up. (Aug.)

From Booklist
*Starred Review* In an autobiographical picture book that will remind many readers of Marjane Satrapi's memoir Persepolis (2003), Sís' latest, a powerful combination of graphic novel and picture book, is an account of his growing up in Czechoslovakia under Soviet rule. Written in several stands, the somewhat fragmented narrative never dilutes the impact of the boldly composed panels depicting scenes from Sís' infancy through young adulthood. Throughout, terrific design dramatizes the conflict between conformity and creative freedom, often through sparing use of color; in many cases, the dominant palette of black, white, and Communist red threatens to swallow up young Peter's freely doodled, riotously colored artwork. The panels heighten the emotional impact, as when Sís fleeing the secret police, emerges from one spread's claustrophobic, gridlike sequence into a borderless, double-page escape fantasy. Even as they side with Peter against fearsome forces beyond his control, younger readers may lose interest as the story moves past his childhood, and most will lack crucial historical context. But this will certainly grab teens—who will grasp both the history and the passionate, youthful rebellions against authority—as well as adults, many of whom will respond to the Cold War setting. Though the term picture book for older readers has been bandied about quite a bit, this memorable title is a true example. Mattson, Jennifer

Not only for children...
By Karel Kriz
Not only for the children:

Everybody is familiar with the saying "we take certain things, like freedom for granted". Peter Sis' book is about living in a country where this self-evident asset did not exist. Bear in mind, the author does not write about some high ideas whose proclamations would endanger the state. He is talking about criticizing government actions within a scope of a neighborly gossip - one cannot complain about the shortages of particular goods, telephones are bugged, certain books and films are banned, press, art and whole culture are censored, foreign radios are jammed, letters are opened and censored, informers are rewarded for snooping etc. "Yes", some readers might say "we already read about it so many times, and the cold war ended seventeen years ago". Of course, books were written about it and some adults even read it, but what is new about this book is its target. It is aimed for the children. The author, a world famous children books illustrator was born in former Czechoslovakia under the Communist regime and he presents the way of life during that terrible period as seen with the children eyes. The book is illustrated with the child -like, but artistic drawings. One might classify it as Comics for the gifted children. Since the facts are refined by the child lenses, I would recommend to read it together with the parents and I am certain that both sides will benefit. Specifically two chapters titled "From my Journals", where the necessary historical ,political events are recorded, could be fully understood only by the High school and higher up students. Since I lived under that system during my adolescence years I could testify for the accuracy of the facts with the understandable omission of the gruesome show trials, where the innocent people were sent to gallows or to heavy imprisonment in the concentration camps. We are aware that it is for the children and we hope that they will learn from it more than our generation did from the books for the adults.
I could voice only one critical comment. The author did not explain how this system came to power as experienced by a common man. Especially the children are prone to follow the logic of the "good guys" against the "bad ones". In general it followed the same path as any would-be totalitarian system. The Communist Party did not proclaim its final goal: total power. In the transient democratic period it promised to the masses essentially a heaven on the earth, for any problem, however complicated offered simple solution, in other words they pretended to be "good guys" and they succeeded... Once in power the Communists simply did not allow any free elections. Of course they were helped by the threat of the Soviet invasion, which had to come anyway many years later. This way presented lesson could help better to-days children to orient in the politics around us.
I strongly recommend this book as an educational and entertaining medium for the whole family.

Totalitarian regimes make for good children's books. They just do. What could be more inherently exciting plot-wise than a world in which you never know who to trust? Where children report parents to the police and freedom and creativity are stifled under the boots of oppressors? That makes for good copy. This year alone we've the Cultural Revolution book, Revolution Is Not a Dinner Party by Ying Chang Compestine and the much discussed Peter Sis title, "The Wall: Growing Up Behind the Iron Curtain." "The Wall" brings together your standard gorgeous Peter Sis imagery with content that is sure to cause debate and interest. Though it's not a book I would necessarily site as a personal favorite and that I have a couple issues with, I appreciate that Sis has created something worth discussing with kids, teens, and adults alike.

He was born at the very beginning of The Cold War in Czechoslovakia. A kid with a penchant for drawing, right from the start, we watch as the growth of young Sis is paralleled with the rise of fear in his nation. Peter draws at home and at school and alongside this story we read of the compulsory and discouraged actions both required and prohibited by the government. The drawn sections are broken up by journal entries Sis wrote at the time, reflecting his beliefs and dreams. With the late 1960s, Sis was entranced by Western influences, a dangerous thing at the time. Near the end, Sis dreams of flying away above it all with wings made out of his art. His escape is cemented by the fall of the Berlin wall in 1989 and an Afterword explains how he left and what Prague is like now.

This is certainly an earnest book. Not humorless, but certainly gung ho in its love of all things American. It's difficult to criticize a book on that basis since what Sis has gone through is unlike anything I could understand or appreciate. The book feels like a cathartic release but it lacks distance. There's a danger of the author being almost too close to his material. Compare "The Wall" to Persepolis and you see the difference. The content is similar but the approach varies wildly. Satrapi is part of the story and, at the same time, removed. She doesn't simplify the story into strict terms, but instead allows the audience to draw their own conclusions based on the information she presents to you. I just don't feel that Sis has done that here. He tells you what to think of the subject matter and when to think it. For example, without batting an eye he suggests that Europe is said to contain, "Truth. Integrity. Honor. Liberty. Virtue," etc. while on the East side of the Berlin Wall there is only, "Envy. Stupidity. Lies," and so forth. He has every right to do so, particularly when you consider that this may be an image of what the young Sis believed lay in the West rather than what was really there. Unfortunately, as it currently stands, the image suggests that the readership not draw their own conclusions and accept the "Virtue" on top of Western Europe and the "Envy" on top of the Eastern half. Even the oppressors are featured with pig noses rather than looking like average everyday joes. How much more interesting it might have been to make the bad guys as human as the good guys. How much more interesting if, like Satrapi, he'd been able to take that one baby step backwards and not tell us what to believe.

Audience has never bothered Peter Sis, so I doubt we should let it bother us either. To my mind, this book is ideal for high school students. You can teach and teach the Cold War to them all day, but unless they get a little primary source material presented in an interesting fashion, who knows how much information they're actually going to take in? Kids might like this book, but they probably won't be able to understand the journal passages. I appreciated that Sis did find a way to make the book kid-friendly, though. At the bottom of each page are sections that can be read to kids and that make sense of young Peter's life. It's only when you read the captions that pop up on the sides of these pictures that you understand the background behind such innocuous statements as, "He didn't question what he was being told."

The journal passages were especially interesting to me. I liked the photographs of young Sis (particularly the hunky mop top with the raised eyebrow) and the glimpses of his art surrounding these passages. It was particularly interesting that Sis' professor at the Academy of Applied Arts was Adolf Hoffmeister who wrote "Brundibar". I wonder now how Sis felt about the Tony Kushner/Maurice Sendak picture book version of that tale. The information and details found in these journals just about make up for the lack of a Bibliography in the back. I suppose that since this is a first-hand account, Sis didn't need to scout out kid-friendly sources to give some context to his lesson. Still, that means that we're being told what to think about these events without a secondary source of any sort. It would be nice if kids were able to learn more about these times on their own, say, with a list of useful websites or books on the subject. I've been discussing whether or not Bibliographies are necessary in picture books. Maybe not always, but if I'm going to recommend this book to teens as well as kids as a bit of non-fiction (and the Dewey call number is 943.704092, after all) then I'm going to want some secondary sources.

The comic book bloggers have been calling this book a picture book graphic novel, and have claimed "The Wall" as their own. It's a very interesting take. At first glance I just assumed that this story was similar in its layout and structure to the Galileo and Darwin books Sis has put out before. And it is, in a way, but then I took a closer look at the structure. Though this is not the case on every page, the art is consistently broken into panels. There aren't speech balloons or much in the way of text integrated within the pictures. Because the words surround the pictures, the eye has something to dance between. The tiny dot style Sis employs here works beautifully within the context of the story. Colors stand out against a black and white background. With the exception of the color red, nothing in Prague is allowed to be colorful. Only Westernized objects and ideas appear in anything but pen and ink. The two-page multi-colored spread of the Spring of 1968 (shown here) stands in sharp contrast to the red-infused earlier spread of Stalinism and its ilk.

Sis hasn't won a Caldecott Award proper quite yet. He's been honored for Tibet Through the Red Box and Starry Messenger (not The Tree of Life, bizarrely) but "The Wall" is bound to be the best bet he's had yet. It's a beautiful book and no one is going to contest that. Shoot, it's already gotten at least four starred reviews in professional journals and is bound to garner some more. Come award season it'll sweep the nominations and everyone will get to hear a lovely Peter Sis speech (he's a very good public speaker) and it will all be lovely and droll. I don't object to the book winning, but I do wish the heavy hand guiding it could have trusted the audience a little and not spelled out its message quite so blatantly (i.e. "America to the rescue"). It's quite an accomplishment but one that could have stood a drop of irony in the mix.

This wonderful book manages to be both creative and insightful, documenting life behind the Iron Curtain during the Cold War in words and graphic design. Peter Sis's use of color in his intricate illustrations highlights and enhances the matter-of-fact language of his text. He has managed to create a journal, biography, and social/historical commentary that is fascinating reading for older children and adults alike.

A nice collector's item.
By kr1126
I would like to note that this is 12 STORIES, not 12 books. It's a collection of short stories. As a matter of fact, all 12 stories combine to a grand total of 592 pages. That said, I think it's neat having a collection of small stories, and the postcards are fantastic! I haven't read all the stories yet, so I can't comment on how good or bad they are, but I think, if you're a Doctor Who fan this is definitely worth the money. The stories are good ones to share with children, as well as read yourself. I intend to share them with my students (5th grade).

Some good reads, some bad reads, overall - ok!
By J. Henning
Doctor Who: 12 Doctors, 12 Stories, 12 Postcards is a small boxed set that contains, as you would have guessed, 12 short stories by 12 different authors, as well as 12 postcards that feature art from the covers of the short story booklets comprised of the outfits of the 12 different doctors in stunning simplistic designs. The stories are:
1. “A Big Hand for the Doctor” by Edin Colfir
2. “The Nameless City” by Michael Scott
3. “The Spear of Destiny” by Marcus Sedgwick
4. “The Roots of Evil” by Philip Reeve
5. “Tip of the Tongue” by Patrick Ness
6. “Something Borrowed” by Richelle Mead
7. “The Ripple Effect” by Malorie Blackmon
8. “Spore” by Alex Scarrow
9. “The Beast of Babylon” by Charlie Higson
10. “The Mystery of the Haunted Cottage” by Derek Landy
11. “Nothing O’Clock” by Neil Gaiman
12. “Lights out” by Holly Black
The stories are intended for a younger audience (8-12 years old, or Grades 3-7) who do not know the Doctor Who Universe very well. Each story, starting with the first, features one of the Doctor’s incarnations, all the way through the twelfth Doctor. While they are different Doctors, they all wield the same tools, such as the Sonic Screwdriver, his stolen TARDIS (Time And Relative Dimension In Space – I.E. his spaceship that’s “bigger on the inside”), his various companions, and of course the Doctor’s knowledge as a Time Lord.
From the first to the twelfth, the stories hook you right from the minute our favorite Doctor shows up. Read along as the Doctor battles everything from old Vikings to his evil nemesis (and the only other Time Lord in existence), The Master.
The problem with these short stories is that they don’t go into the depth that an average Doctor Who fan requires, and deserves. With each Doctor, there are special quirks and uniqueness about them that just isn’t present in the stories. These small quirks are what makes each version of the Doctor different and keeps us entertained. Without them, it’s the same Doctor, same tools – only a different adventure. This can get boring quickly.
All in all, this small set of stories that totals 596 pages is a recommendation for any Doctor Who fan, simply because they are stories that are mildly entertaining about our favorite hero!

Order and Dispute: An Introduction to Legal Anthropology (Second Edition), by Simon Roberts

A classic resource in the modern study of the anthropology of law, this acclaimed book is now widely available again in an updated and expanded Second Edition, and in this new trade paperback edition (in addition to hardcover and ebook versions from Quid Pro Books). There are many societies that survive in a remarkably orderly fashion without the help of judges, law courts and policemen. They are small in scale and have relatively simple technologies, lacking those centralized agencies which we associate with legal systems; yet early anthropologists did not hesitate to name "law," along with kinship, politics and religion, as one of the facets of their subject. Simon Roberts contends, however, that legal theory has become too closely identified with our own arrangements in western societies to be of much help in cross-cultural studies of order. But conversely, by looking at the ways in which other societies keep order and solve disputes, he sheds valuable light on the contemporary debates about order in our own society, in a straightforward text which will be accessible to the general reader and anthropologist alike. Now in its Second Edition with a new Foreword and Afterword by the author, this renowned introduction to the anthropology of law is part of the Classics of Law & Society Series from Quid Pro Books. Its modern presentation uses larger font, margins, and dimensions than the original paperback edition, yet adds no more pages.

Another oldie but goldie from Quid Pro
By Boston Law Prof
Quid Pro has developed a fabulous niche in resuscitating out of print classics, like Llewellyn's The Bramble Bush or Holmes's The Common Law. This is a classic piece on the anthropology of ordered societies, and particularly those that have achieved the order without what we would recognize as modern, liberal, post-Enlightenment law. This should be on the bookshelf of anybody who puzzles over the role of law and rights.

Review

“The book is called an ‘Encyclopedia’ for a reason.  In roughly 1000 pages, it contains 53 chart patterns plus 9 more event patterns which will pretty much cover you for any chart you come across…. if you take technical trading seriously, it is a book that should be on your shelf.”
—Alan Battista, Stockineer.com Book Review

From the Inside Flap
The Encyclopedia of Chart Patterns, recognized as the premier reference on chart pattern analysis, extends its lead with this Second Edition. This definitive text includes new bull and bear market statistics, performance sorted by volume shape and trend, more than a dozen additional chart patterns, and a new section covering ten event patterns. Significant events—such as earnings announcements, stock upgrades and downgrades—shape today's trading, and Bulkowski gives readers the best information on what happens after those events occur. He also shows you how to trade them and uses reliable statistics to back it all up.

In each chapter of Encyclopedia of Chart Patterns, Second Edition you'll learn the following about each pattern:

  • Results Snapshot—A statistical summary of pattern behavior, including its performance rank, breakeven failure rate, average rise or decline—all separated by breakout direction and market type (bull or bear)
  • Tour—A broad introduction to the pattern
  • Identification Guidelines— Characteristics to look for
  • Focus on Failures—What failed patterns look like, why they failed, and how to avoid them
  • Statistics—The numbers and what they tell you, separated into bull/bear markets and breakout direction, including average rise or decline, failure rates, volume shapes, performance by size, and busted pattern performance
  • Trading Tactics—Strategies to increase profits and minimize risk
  • Sample Trade—Puts it all together, showing the chart pattern in action, with hypothetical or actual trades using real data
  • For Best Performance—A table of selection tips to boost performance

Encyclopedia of Chart Patterns, Second Edition also includes summary tables ranking chart- and event-pattern performance for easy reference; a glossary; a chapter on methodology explaining what each statistical table entry means and how it was calculated; and a visual index to make chart pattern identification a snap.

The result is today's most comprehensive and valuable technical analysis reference—one that will save you critical time in identifying chart patterns and increase your likelihood of buying near the price bottom and selling near the top.

A New Perspective on Chart Patterns
By Guang Lu
Many years ago, when I was a college student in China, one of my most enjoyable moments was to sit in library reading Encyclopedia Britannica, which always gave me new perspectives for the world. It was natural that the title of this book attracted my attention and I bought it immediately. What a wonderful reference book to add to my trading library! I only wish I had it before the market crashed in 2000, when I lost all my trading accounts.

This reader-friendly book consists of Part One Chart Patterns (53 chapters) and Part Two Event Patterns (10 chapters). Each chapter focuses on a specific chart pattern with informative details. The RESULTS SNAPSHOP and TOUR are very useful to give readers a general idea of each chart pattern. The IDENTIFICATION GUIDELINES and TRADING TACTICS give readers a practical trading guide. The STATISTICS shows the author's new approach to analyze each chart pattern scientifically. The SAMPLE TRADE is a fictitious story to illustrate a trading circumstance. The FOCUS ON FAILURES provides necessary warnings for each chart pattern. All the technically complicated information is smartly rendered in layperson's language. I think if every trader (day traders, swing traders, position traders, and buy-and-hold investors) reads this book, we will be on the same page and will act similarly. Then, our trading will become more consistently profitable.

Of course, this is not a book to read from cover to cover. Instead, it is a must-have reference book. Any time I found a chart pattern showing a potential for profits, I checked it with this encyclopedia and designed a proper plan to trade with the pattern. This way, I learned while I earned. However, this book is not a crystal ball, but a great trading tool, which you should master. Should we ask more from a book?

Guang Lu, Ph.D.

The Bible!
By Ron G
Save yourself at least a year of back testing strategies using tradestation and collecting statistics.

This book is an encyclopedia, not a "psychological" trading type book. This is dry and technical information, statistics, numbers, etc. I wouldnt have it any other way. Make sure you have a trading platform that will allow you to put this information to good work.

This book is a must.

A MUST
By Mark Dankowski
If I were to be deprived of all the trading books in my collection but one, that would be The Encyclopedia. Unlike other literature on the patterns, in this book you will not find clauses like "most of the time", "usually", "seldom". All the information as it's related to the pattern trading is thoroughly backtested.

Few words about the author are due here. I do not believe you will find more ethical individual in the trading community than Mr. Bulkowski is. Unlike others who use their books as an advertising medium to lure you into subscription to their services and seminars, the author simply does not do that. His web site is FREE and he sells nothing but his book.

I can't even say that this book is highly recommended or you should buy this book... Nothing like that. I believe you owe yourself having this book on your desk 24/7 if you are to trade chart patterns. If you do not trade chart patterns then... you should not trade at all as all the "indicators" are nothing but derivatives of the price and volume behavior. Turn of all that noise and focus on patterns and volume and that's what this book is teaching you to do.
