5 star textbook. 1 star software - Ridiculous registration system.
By Al
We used this text for my Management Accounting course in my MBA program. The text is well written and easy to follow. Between the clear explanations, the useful mini case real world examples (kept current through frequent edition updates), and the self work problems at the end of the chapter it is one of the best I have seen. One thing I particularly liked was the notes in every example stating exactly how every number was generated. There was no "left to for the student" or "by inspection". 5 stars

The student value edition is a loose leaf format that is easy to use. You can put the chapters in a separate binder in the order the professor presents them. The pages are medium newsprint grade paper and take ink and highlighters well, though there is some bleed through (no worse than a cheap book). I minimized by blotting with a tissue at the end of the line. I was worried the pages would rip, but with reasonable care they lasted the semester without any issues. One thing I really like about this format is the wide margins that really facilitates note taking. Overall the book was fair value and I will consider this format again in the future.

My experience with the My Accounting online system was EXTREMELY poor. You would think that you would register with the one time registration code that came with the book. No. I called the company to try and get registered. You can't register without a course code that the professor has to get from a LIVE company rep during OFFICE hours. To be clear this is a FOUR stage process - professor calls, company provides course code to professor, professor supplies to you, you log on the site and register using the special one time code that came with the book. Note that they will not issue a course code to a student calling to say what course they are taking at what university (and the valid one time registration code that came with the book). Don't leave to the last minute. 1 star

Unconscionable Textbook Practices
By Steve
A class I took at junior college required Cost Accounting, the 14th Edition. I ended up paying $200 for that book.

It's one semester later and I now have to take a class at my University that requires the same textbook. Because the 15th edition was just released this year, I had to purchase the book again. I now have over $400 invested in this one book. When I compare the 14th and 15th editions side-by-side, they are the same word-for-word; however, the page numbers don't line up. Also, as I suspected, the homework problems at the end of each chapter are different. Basically, nothing has been changed about the book to make the 15th any better than the 14th. The publisher updated the problems so they could force students to buy the newest edition.

As for the content, this book is one of the worst written textbooks I have seen. Anybody who's studied writing style and usage has heard of Strunk and White's "The Elements of Style." The authors of this textbook definitely need to read Strunk and White to learn how to write coherently. I'll give a few writing examples to demonstrate why this book drives me nuts.

"Strategy" is defined as "how the organization matches its own capabilities with the opportunities in the marketplace." A followup term, "strategic cost management," is said to "describe cost management that specifically focuses on strategic issues." The book then goes into a bullet list (of which many appear throughout the text) listing arbitrary questions like "Who are our most important customers, and how can we be competitive and deliver value to them?"

When isolated, these terms may seem straightforward. However, reading several hundred pages of nothing but this kind of writing takes an impossible amount of stamina, and students new to the subject will eventually find themselves confused and hating the subject.

An issue I mentioned briefly above is the use of lists. I noticed a trend in newer business textbooks where authors present information in long bullet-point and numbered lists. Some of the bullet-point lists contain nested numbered lists and vice versa. I suppose the authors assume that they can make their points clearer by listing them, but the didactic value is minimal. To give you readers a taste of what this textbook is like, open a Betty Crocker cookbook and peruse every recipe word for word. Don't feel tempted to prepare the recipes - read them only. Did you notice how little you can retain of the ingredient lists? That's about how much you'll retain of the information in this textbook.

Some of you may be required to purchase this book for your classes. Be sure to check if your class require an online code. Sometimes these textbooks are wrapped specifically for your class, and if you don't buy it from your college bookstore, you'll end up paying an additional amount for an online access code.

If you want to study on your own, you won't find many options other than this textbook. It's literally the standard book used in most cost accounting classes. I recommend that you buy an older, used edition of this book. The newer and older editions differ mainly in the homework problems and nothing else. You would therefore save hundreds of dollars by purchasing the 14th or even 13th edition used. One caveat, however: The solutions are not made publicly available for any edition. You can try to harass Pearson for solutions, and they'll cheerfully let you know that only verified teachers at certified educational institutions are allowed the solutions. It's a hassle, I know, but what else can you do to learn the material? Conduct a web search? Good luck.

The Prison Notes, by Corneliu Zelea Codreanu

Corneliu Zelea Codreanu was the founder
and leader of the Legion of St. Michael the
Archangel, otherwise known as the Iron
Guard, in Romania between 1927 and 1938.
While many of the revolutionary nationalist
movements of the period are long forgotten, Codreanu's movement continues to be studied today. The reason is because Codreanu
envisioned the Legion as being not simply
a political movement, but rather a knightly
order in which all members were suffused
with the spirit of God, self-sacrifice and the essence of the Romanian people. This is no more evident than in his Prison Notes, which he kept after being imprisoned on false charges by the government. Although the judiciary was unwilling to sentence him to more than ten years' labour, Codreanu was 'shot while trying to escape' shortly after these notes were written. His body was then rendered unrecognisable with acid and clandestinely buried under seven tons of concrete to hide the crime. The Prison Notes are the testimony of a man who, while disappointed by the corruption and ill treatment he faces, remains strengthened by the power of his faith and commitment to a higher cause. Also included in this volume are translations of all of Julius Evola's essays on the subject of Codreanu. Evola, who met Codreanu in Bucharest shortly before his arrest, recognised in Codreanu a kindred spirit who saw profane politics only as a means toward a restoration of genuine hierarchy and aristocracy. We have also appended a series of rarely-seen photos of the Iron Guard and Codreanu to this volume to complete the record of a movement which has withstood and transcended the test of time.

A sad ending to a honorable life
By E.Hun
The Northern Light did a fine review of this.

It is a must read for anyone interested or motivated by the life of Codreanu; unfortunately there is not much to read.

Must admit after reading this book I was put into a bit of a somber mood; his entry from April 29th particularly sticks out: "O Lord! How long is this day!?"

Leeson's Lessons
By Jerry Sanchez
As it turns out, Nick Leeson does not seem to be a terrible guy, although he single-handedly caused the collapse of one of the oldest banks in the world in early 1995, Barings Bank. I just don't understand how he could let the 88888 account continue for so long once the losses started building. Why not confess? What started with some mistakes and an attempt to hide them soon took on a life of its own and grew out of control. Sure, Barings should have had more internal controls and could have monitored Leeson better, but to think that a young kid from suburban London would outwardly forge reports and signatures to cover his trail is unbelievable. It was fraud and he knew it.

This book is an interesting account of the collapse of one of Britain's oldest and most powerful merchant banks by Nick Leeson while trading derivatives on the Singapore, Nikkei and Osaka stock exchanges. Leeson recreated conversations and the year leading up to his capture with amazing detail, all of which makes for interesting reading. I was interested in the underlying reasons for the collapse of Barings, and thus, the book did drag on a bit. But once Leeson realized he would be discovered and fled Singapore with his wife in late February 1995, the story really got exciting. All in all, an interesting self-account of how covering one's mistakes will lead to lies upon lies, which, as it did with Leeson, will ultimately lead to disaster.

A Fast Paced Personal Apologetic - Great Read

Rogue Trader is a well written, fast paced, intimate first hand apologetic of Nicky Leeson's dealings on the Simex trading floor in Singapore and how he managed to run up huge losses to the tune of £600 million without anyone noticing and breaking one of England's oldest merchant banks. In a world where Jerome Kerviel loses EUR4.9 billion on the back of EUR49.9 billion in unauthorized trades for Société Générale , Bernie Madoff runs a US$50 billion Ponzi scheme, where Lehman Brothers no longer exists and AIG is bailed out by the US government for US$180 billion, the "small" affair of losing £600 million in unapproved futures trades and options gambling doesn't seem so terrible, but it was enough to break one of the oldest merchant banks in the UK and create one of the hugest scandals in banking history at the time. Since Leeson broke Barings, many other financial catastrophes and corporate scandals (Long Term Capital Management, Enron, the dot com bubble and sub-prime mortgages to name a few) have come and gone and some remain with us today. Perhaps these events make Rogue Trader even more relevant today than ever.

It seems ironic that in this account of his misdeeds Mr. Leeson comes across as being incredibly honest about his fraud and his crimes. He doesn't shy away from the things he did and admits that he, and he alone is to blame for the catastrophe that befell Barings. He offers excuses (loyalty to the team, covering up their mistakes etc.) but ultimately the book is clear: once the initial deficit in the famed 88888 error account was cleared, greed to generate large profits on a risky futures spread led to the spiraling effect that eventually accrued severe losses for Barings and finally led to their downfall.

Mr. Leeson's account is also clear about the failings in the system and clear on what could have been done to prevent the losses he had accrued over the time he was doing it. I suppose it is easy in retrospect to question why someone would so easily transfer the tens of millions of pounds on a daily basis to cover margin calls, when the capital base of the bank was only a couple of hundred million. It is also hard to believe how it was possible for him to cover his tracks with lies about unauthorized over the counter deals without those deals being properly audited and investigated. Certainly the blame for the high-risk trading falls squarely on Mr. Leeson's shoulders. He doesn't shy away from it and doesn't hide from it, but there were clearly severe structural faults within the bank and no effective risk-management methodologies employed to ensure honesty in the traders and especially to grant oversight to Mr. Leeson. The greatest weakness in the system was Mr. Leeson being granted the right to manage the trading floor and the back office where trades where reconciled. He even admitted this was open to being corrupted and auditors even noted this was a structural weakness, but they never did close the hole. These structural flaws were noted in the book and as per Mr. Leeson, when reports were released by the Singaporean government, many of these flaws were exposed and blame spread across the board for failure to take note of what was going on.

Rogue Trader also has its tender moments. There is no doubt that Mr. Leeson was deeply in love with his wife at the time and there is no doubt that when they were on the run in Malaysia and Brunei there seemed to be genuine affection and love. Mr. Leeson speaks very highly of Lisa and even though they have since divorced, Rogue Trader shows the affection and passion he had for her and she had for him. Some of the moments they shared were truly touching and should not be second guessed. His portrayal of their relationship was an honest one and never, throughout the book is there a bad word said about Lisa (not that I can remember anyway). He truly loved her and she was in my mind amazing to stand by him through the initial troubles and trials he had to endure.

Rogue Trader is therefore a very personal, very real and very honest account of what happened and what caused the bank to crash. Some parts are amusing, others tragic. It is still a fantastic read 15 years after the fact. Since this book was published, Mr. Leeson has served his time in a Singaporean prison, survived colon cancer, remarried, has written a second book and is now the CEO of a football club. In Rogue Trader Mr. Leeson portrays himself as someone who was haunted by his shadows and who was relieved when they were exposed so he could once again walk in the light. Others who failed to provide proper oversight, could not. Some of those protagonists have reignited their careers (e.g. Peter Norris who was the head of Barings Investment Division is now chairman of the Virgin Group) but many did not. Mr. Leeson, as he says in public talks, will always be remembered as the man who broke Barings Bank, but he has moved on with his life and I for one am glad for him.

A trader going to jail, good story
By Stephen Samperi
Over 350 pages (small pages)and easy to read, chronological and a little funny. Entertaining and very detailed account of what Nick Leeson did to cause Baring's Bank to collapse. I would have liked the book more if Nick described his trading in the pit more in his career than just when he was doubling down on his huge losses at the very end. He shows several official statements from authorities and people at the bank. Many people around him were described. I recommend this book to anyone interested in futures trading, bond trading or the Baring's collapse.
