A Book For Every Teacher: Teaching English Language Learners, by Nan Li

A Book for Every Teacher: Teaching English Language Learners is a unique and compressive text written for mainstream classroom teachers. The passion for writing this book comes from our working experiences with the K–12 teachers in four school districts through our Ell Center professional development program. Through this program, we provide professional training through our federally funded research and service projects. The purpose of our professional training is to prepare general education teachers to work effectively with English language learners (Ells). While working with the teachers on a daily basis, we know the immediate needs of the teachers. This motivated us to embark this book project. In recent years, the Ell school population has the highest increase among school populations. As the Nea data indicates, providing Ell students with high quality services and programs is an important investment in America's future (Nea, 2013). This book is our investment in helping teachers to meet their challenges and provide useful information and strategies for teaching Ells. The book is designed with K–12 teachers in mind. It is best used by teachers who have or will have Ells in their classrooms and who seek information and strategies to better work with and serve their Ells to achieve academic success. With this design, teachers can use the book as a text or reference tool. This book can also be adopted as text materials for professional training. Teachers are the most important factor for Ells' academic success.

Highly Recommended
By Mariette Dargan
I not only found 'A Book for Every Teacher' informational, I found it to be an enjoyable read. The book gave many helpful tips on how to better reach my ELL students. I have students in my class that do not receive extra help from an ESOL teacher, therefore, I have to make the necessary adjustments in my classroom. My lower level students also benefit from some of the changes that I have made. I recommend this book to all teachers, regardless if they do not have an ELL student in their classroom this year.

Sacred Monsters: Mysterious and Mythical Creatures of Scripture, Talmud and Midrash, by Natan Slifkin

Unicorns, mermaids, dragons, and phoenixes may feel at home in fantasy literature, but references to these and other mysterious creatures go back much further in history. The Bible, Talmud, and Midrash refer to many such strange creatures. In this beautifully designed and richly illustrated book, Natan Slifkin, the famed "zoo rabbi" and author of Seasons of Life, Nature's Song, and The Challenge of Creation, examines a host of mythic and not so mythic creatures from both their Torah descriptions and modern zoological research, giving us a new perspective on the interface between science, myth, and Torah thought. Greatly expanding on a prior book, Mysterious Creatures, Rabbi Slifkin explores conflicts between the Talmud and science in the context of Torah mysteries of zoology. The Talmud and Midrash discuss a wide range of bizarre creatures, including mermaids, unicorns, griffins, dragons, sea-serpents and phoenixes, as well as strange biological concepts such as spontaneous generation. Sacred Monsters discusses these cases in detail and brings a range of different approaches for understanding them. It is an essential book for any student or educator who has ever struggled with conflicts between the Talmud and science. Strikingly designed, and including extraordinary photographs and illustrations, this is a truly stimulating work. The goal of this book is not merely to persuade readers that the Talmud and Midrash are worthy of their interest. It is important to discuss these creatures for the same reason that the Sages of the Talmud and Torah scholars throughout the ages saw fit to discuss them &emdash; namely, that they are also part of Torah. Torah is not just about history, religious ritual and laws of interpersonal conduct. It is an extremely broad field of study that encompasses many different topics. Some areas of the Torah are more popular or more relevant than others, but we should not neglect the others. The animals of this book are discussed in classical Jewish literature for a variety of reasons. With some, such as the tachash, it is a matter of understanding the construction of the Tabernacle. With others, such as the mermaid, the goal is to clarify a matter of law. And with yet others, such as Leviathan, the point is to convey various theological messages. Furthermore, there is a particular pressing need for a book of this nature. When people encounter references to such creatures in the Talmud, they can be left with anything from gnawing questions to a severe crisis of faith. Did such creatures really exist? Did the Sages of the Talmud really believe in such creatures? What are we to make of it? This book studies the history of the various approaches that have traditionally been taken by Torah scholars in resolving such issues.

Review
Rabbi Natan Slifkin's new book, Sacred Monsters, is a very impressive work, combining exceptionally broad scholarship in such varied fields as science, classical literature, and the Jewish tradition. It provides fascinating insights into the literature of legendary creatures and their possible origins. In this particular book, the author has managed to avoid the many pitfalls awaiting anyone treating the intersection between science and Torah. --Professor Yehudah Leo Levi, Rector Emeritus, Jerusalem College of Technology, Author, Torah and Science

Rabbi Natan Slifkin's newest book is a delightful mix of Talmudic teachings, zoological science, and historical investigations. Anyone who ever doubted the comprehensiveness of our Torah will now be convinced that kulah bah -- there is a place in it even for 'sacred monsters.' Rabbi Slifkin is to be commended for once again offering us a work which answers questions, informs, and, in this case, even entertains. --Rabbi Dr. Tzvi Hersh Weinreb, Executive Vice President, The Orthodox Union

References in the Talmud and Midrash to curious zoological phenomena are often more mystifying than the creatures themselves. Rabbi Slifkin's thorough scholarship, so well proven in his previous works, comes through once again. Even more important than providing answers to thorny questions surrounding the subjects of the book's title, this work helps the student plot a steady course through the sometimes churning waters of the Sages' science. How much did they rely on the science of their day? When did they--and when did they not--mean to be taken literally? Rabbi Slifkin provides answers consistent with the spirit of our mesorah. By doing so, the profundity of the Torah of our Sages shines with even greater brilliance. --Rabbi Yitzchok Adlerstein, Author, Maharal: Be'er HaGolah

Science Fiction in the Talmud?
By Dr Dave
As the only scientist at most Talmud sessions I am usually put on the spot as being sacriligious for not accepting the fundamentalist approach. Rabbi Slifkin has calmed and comforted me by gathering pertinent alternative explanations from Jewish source texts. If I were learned enough I would have liked to have written this and some other of his books.

A wonderful book. Respectful of rabbinic authority and knowlegeable, the author has an inciteful and extensive knowlege of history, halacha and Torah. His approach to resolving issues concerning science, the modern world and Torah is surely going to result in his being acclaimed in future as one of the gedolim of our age.

Great Book.
By S. Dzh
its an amazing read. Got lucky that I have a copy, got it signed as well. (Should have brought more copies when had the chance for $25/each) It's a bummer that this book isn't re-printed and copies are low.
This book analyzes creatures and phenomena both from a scientific and Jewish point of view, bringing sources upon sources for the material. Also asking what was meant and understood literal and what was not. And also bringing down the deeper meanings of questions like giants for example and what the measurements symbolize. Over-all great book.

Nei Kung: The Secret Teachings of the Warrior Sages, by Kosta Danaos

Explains the science behind the practice of nei kung, the elemental nature of yin and yang energy--the two components of ch'i, and how learning to control the yang energy in our ch'i can result in the release of dynamic energy.

• Establishes the existence and understanding of nei kung in the practices of many of the world's ancient cultures.

• Includes a step-by-step guide to the meditation that forms the basis of the practice of nei kung.

• By Kosta Danaos, author of The Magus of Java and apprentice to an immortal of the Mo-Pai tradition.

In 1994 Kosta Danaos was accepted as a student by John Chang, a Chinese-Javanese Taoist in the Mo-Pai tradition and a master of nei kung, the practice of harnessing and controlling our body's bioenergy, or ch'i. Nei Kung: The Secret Teachings of the Warrior Sages describes the practice of nei kung and how learning to control our ch'i can result in the release of dynamic energy that can be used for healing, pyrogenesis, telekinesis, levitation, telepathy, and more.

Danaos suggests that both components of ch'i--yin and yang energy--are fundamental to the earth and to life and were recognized and used in many of the world's ancient cultures. Though we have forgotten how to access them, these components are in fact elemental parts of us.  The author explains that we first must open our minds to the fact that the power of ch'i is real. Next, in learning to control our ch'i as a whole, we must learn to channel our yang energy in productive ways--a potential we all possess. To help readers understand their capacity to connect with this inner elemental power, the author offers a fascinating blend of teachings that include sound scientific theories explaining much of the "magic" of nei kung. He also offers historical, linguistic, artistic, and literary proof of the presence and understanding of nei kung throughout the ages and a step-by-step introduction to several types of simple meditation--fundamental to directing one's ch'i.

With his engaging storytelling and disarming humor, his physics-based explanations for seemingly mystical phenomena, and his reassurances that he's really no different from the rest of us, Kosta Danaos shows us that once we remember our capacity to harness our yang energy, we can change ourselves and our world.

Review
"Makes excellent reading for energy practitioners and armchair explorers alike who are ready to feel yin and yang energy." (Cynthia Sue Larson, Amazon.com Top 500 Reviewer, August 2002)

From the Back Cover
EASTERN PHILOSOPHY / MARTIAL ARTS

In 1994 Kosta Danaos was accepted as a student by John Chang, a Chinese-Javanese Taoist in the Mo-Pai tradition and a master of nei kung, the practice of harnessing and controlling our body’s bioenergy, or ch’i. Nei Kung: The Secret Teachings of the Warrior Sages describes the practice of nei kung and how learning to control our ch’i can result in the release of dynamic energy that can be used for healing, pyrogenesis, telekinesis, levitation, telepathy, and more.

Danaos suggests that both components of ch’i--yin and yang energy--are fundamental to the earth and to life and were recognized and used in many of the world’s ancient cultures. Though we have forgotten how to access them, these components are in fact elemental parts of us. The author explains that we first must open our minds to the fact that the power of ch’i is real. Next, in learning to control our ch’i as a whole, we must learn to channel our yang energy in productive ways--a potential we all possess. To help readers understand their capacity to connect with this inner elemental power, the author offers a fascinating blend of teachings that include sound scientific theories explaining much of the “magic” of nei kung. He also offers historical, linguistic, artistic, and literary proof of the presence and understanding of nei kung throughout the ages and a step-by-step introduction to several types of simple meditation--fundamental to directing one’s ch’i.

With his engaging storytelling and disarming humor, his physics-based explanations for seemingly mystical phenomena, and his reassurances that he’s really no different from the rest of us, Kosta Danaos shows us that once we remember our capacity to harness our yang energy, we can change ourselves and our world.

KOSTA DANAOS is a professional engineer, an experienced martial arts instructor in jujutsu, kung fu, and t’ai chi chuan, and a freelance writer. He lives in Athens, Greece.

What a let down! I loved "Magus of Java" but this ruins it!
By Dennis Yoon
I loved the "Magus of Java" and I eageraly awaited this one but I went away with a dirty feeling of being played. He builds you up so much and then leaves you with: His master doesn't take students and doesn't want his whereabouts revealed. Then you are given some photos of seated meditations and encouraged to meditate. Oh and by the way the teachings are secret and not to be revealed for obvious reasons. Duh? Meanwhile you put up with his paying homage to Greek Nei Kung for half the book. What??? If you really practice meditation I think you'd realize when your ego is on a trip. I think Greek people would be offended by having their mysticism defined in Chinese martial art terminology as well.
Realistically, no one expects to master martial arts or Nei Kung from books but an author shouldn't make readers feel "Punk'd" like you're on MTV after reading his book. You can go to your local martial art school and if they teach a traditional system you'll surpass what you get from his books in terms of real application of martial arts. Just doing the traditional warmup exercises and stretches gives you more Nei Kung than both his books combined.
May I recommend these author's and their books:
Mantak Chia: He has a bunch of profusely illustrated Taoist Manuals and videos.
Dr. Yang Jwing Ming: He has many Chi Kung titles with exellent photos and videos as well.
Their books are full of information and they are not stingy or mysterious about it. They also seem interested in improving the health of their students as opposed to having power to kill and dominate people. Above all it seems more practical to find your own teachers and knowledge than to get fooled into thinking Nei Kung is unattainable and that only hidden masters know it and will take it with them to their graves.

A bit of a disappointment. Still some good stuff
By George Washington
After highly anticipating this book, I must say that I was disappointed. After purchasing the book which suggested that it would reveal "Secret Teachings of Warrior Sages" I found out that Mr. Danaos can only share knowledge cryptically (his words). And unfortunately he does not do this well. The amount of actual practical methods taught in the book are condensed to 8 pages of basic Qigong/Chi Kung and meditation. If you are looking for how to achieve any levels in the Mo-Pai nei kung system, then you must actually find John Chang, or one of his disciples. Having said that, I must say that there are good points to the book.
Some of the theory was interesting if you could sift through the esoterica and historical presentations. I do think that Mr. Danaos knows his stuff, but I feel that he is either unwilling or unable (prior secrecy agreements) to share what he has learned. I liked Mr Danaos' first book so much that I really wanted to give this one a good review, but I cannot. Still may be worth purchasing for your library. I think it is.

Interesting, implausible book
By Scott Meredith
Just calling out and summarizing a few good points made by other reviewers already. The key points are (I think)
(a) There is a HUGE discrepancy between the 2nd-hand stories told & heard (about Mr. Chang, Mr. Liao his teacher, and others) and the events and powers actually witnessed on-site by Mr. Kosta personally. It is a gigantic chasm, and Mr. Kosta does not seem to be particularly aware of it.
(b) There is discrepancy in the stated motivations - one the one hand, it is so important and vital to get this material into the public sphere, it might help save the world, realign our values, reconcile mysticism and science, and so forth. In fact however, there are NO specifics given of the actual practices, nor, after having "read everything published in English about Nei-Gong and Taosim" does Mr. Kosta actually give us a point-by-point comparison and evaluation of the actual practices he was taught. This is important information, because he also states that Mr. Chang is in effect a rare genius, a statistical fluke of pure natural ability, on par with a gold medal Olympian. So, we are left unsure - was this super-human result due to a perfect unique marriage of unbelievably rare raw talent and exceptional effective (hitherto secret) method ? Or was one element predominant ? Would somebody of Mr. Chang's raw talent have done as well practicing Yoga or TM ? Or, would just about anybody be able to get to the levels needed to "save the world" one invidual at a time, by following the special secret method of Mo-Pai ? We'd need a much better comparison of Mo-Pai training methods in view of the thousands of other systems and practices that are much more widely described and available. I don't believe that Mr. Kosta's 2nd book has filled this need very specifically either.
(c) Why, if the motivation is to spread the word on the exceptionaly effecive Mo-Pai practices, to help save the Earth, etc. is there no course of instruction mentioned, no way to find a school or a teacher, no way to begin training.
(d) I wish there had been more discussion and justification of the idea of the 72 levels. I find it hard to credit that such an individualized and mysterious realm of human endeavor (energy, awareness, and mind) can be so neatly characterized. I note that even at level 40 or 50 or so, as I believe Mr. Chang is claimed to be, he still needs money, water, food, transportation, and basically participates in life in the same mildly destructive ways that we all do. How that can be a formula or model for a values revolution that will save the Earth is not made clear. If it just an example of a simple, spiritual life we need to steer us onto the higher road, wouldn't the life of Ghandhi (much better documented) or other simple, sprititual people be more ready-to-hand and accessible for that job ? So it is not made clear exactly how, even if everybody in the world suddenly rushed to study Mo-Pai, that would entail an Earth-saving values shift, anymore than if they all started working on TM or Zen or simple prayer anything else. I suppose being able to ignite newspapers without a match is supposed to be more of an incentive to value-shift oneself than the simple presence and words of better known spiritual/inspirational figures ?
Overall, the presentation is SO MUCH like Castenada that, having plowed through about 15 other Don Juan "localized" versions (Don Juan in - China, Australia, Brazil, Japan, Middle East, Berkeley, etc.) I just can't help but feel the presentation is formulaic.
At least, however, we are certain of the bare fact that a kung fu teacher of John Chang's name and general description does exist and has been photographed. In that prosaic sense, Mr. Kosta has delivered more than the usual "Don Juan franchise" formula. Beyond those skeletal facts, however, we know nothing.

Water: A Comprehensive Guide for Brewers (Brewing Elements), by John Palmer, Colin Kaminski

Water is arguably the most critical and least understood of the foundation elements in brewing beer. Water: A Comprehensive Guide for Brewers, third in Brewers Publications’ Brewing Elements series, takes the mystery out of water’s role in the brewing process. The book leads brewers through the chemistry and treatment of brewing water, from an overview of water sources, to adjusting water for different beer styles, and different brewery processes, to wastewater treatment. The discussions include how to read water reports, understanding flavor contributions, residual alkalinity, malt acidity, and mash pH.

Review
"If you don't get the water right, neither will you succeed with the beer. Water is a precious commodity, from its availability, through its quality, right to its departure down the drain. It demands respect and that is precisely what it receives in this book, which is packed with valuable information, calculations and lines for brewers large and small." -- Charles Bamforth, Professor of Malting & Brewing Sciences, University of California "In addition to extracting nuggets from the literature, the authors have drawn on the knowledge of experienced brewers ... and those who have developed software for doing some of the complex calculations and experiments. With such a breadth of sources, this book will either answer your brewing water questions or have you well on the way to those answers." -- From the Foreword by A J deLange, Water Researcher/Homebrewer "I have worked with water my entire engineering career and I know the intricacies of typical water treatment and utilisation. Brewing water needs are a unique aspect that have received little research or explanation in the past. This book assembles a wide variety of information focused on the specialised water needs in brewing and makes it accessible to all brewers. The treatment of brewing water can be as simple or complicated as a brewer wants to make it, but any brewer will find things in this book that can make their beer better." -- Martin Brungard, Water Resource Engineer/Homebrewer

Everything you need to know times 1,000
By m.c. squared
Just like every other book I've read on brewing water, it seems that the relevant material is buried within a plethora of unnecessary information. How many home brewers require a knowledge of "Wort ph as a function of roasting time and temperature"? Moles, Mill-equivalents and Equilibrium Constants? Approximate relationship between CO2 and Total Alkalinity in pure water? How many home-brewers know (or want to know) how to read: 40g Ca^2 + 122g HCO3^-1 100g CaCo3 + 44g CO2 + 18g H2O? I was overwhelmed and turned off by such data because it is presented prior to really getting to the stuff for which I purchased the book.

That said, there is a treasure trove of good information here if you can slog your way through to it. Perhaps the uber technical stuff should be included as an appendix and referenced as needed in the text for those interested.

Maybe I don't know what it is I need to know, but what I wanted to know was:

1. What are the ideal ranges of water ph and mineral profiles for various beer styles. NOT the water profile of the town that the style was originally brewed.
2. How to understand the properties of the water I am using.
3. The importance of the mash ph and how water alkalinity and grain bill help to approach the target (RA). Then how to adjust the ph if it is out of the acceptable range. Not in moles, mill-equivalents or furlongs per fortnight but grams/ml per gallon mash.
4. The affect of mineral levels and ratios on beer flavor, head retention, hop utilization, etc. Then how to adjust my water to achieve these levels.

While most of this information is included it is a hard read getting there. The additional uber technical info just seemed to complicate (obfuscate) the necessary information. Just one guys thoughts.

Excellent technical book
By Drew
"Water" is the third book in the Brewing Elements series, after "Yeast" (Zainasheff/White) and "Hops" (Heironymous). This is easily the most technical book of the three. Like the other books, this is targeted at both home brewers and professional brewers, so there are a couple chapters in there that most homebrewers will gloss over (e.g. waste water treatment). However, there is a wealth of information that can help the homebrewer improve the quality of his/her beer.

While the book does not shy away from the technical details, it remains fairly readable, even to someone like me who has not thought about chemistry since high school. While many chemical equations are included, they are largely unnecessary (albeit helpful) to understanding the bulk of the material. Where one absolutely must think about techincal details, the authors do a good job of simplifying the computations as they apply to actually making beer.

One highlight of the book is that it heavily incorporates the (recent) research of noted homebrewers such as Brungard, deLange, and Troester. I personally have been going mostly off of the writings of these three (on various websites and forums) for my knowledge of brewing water up until now; I am excited to have this information synthesized in one place.

The book also includes several examples of how to take a target water profile and modify it to brew a particular style of beer. Along with the general guidelines presented, the reader should be able to then apply these principles to their own water and beer styles they are brewing. Like the "Yeast" book, I see this becoming one of the brewing books I pull off the shelf most frequently.

Water book useful for Brewers, Distillers and Winemakers
By Gary Spedding
A much awaited book on water chemistry and treatment for brewers is finally here. Was it worth the wait?

First of all a criticism - the authors, reviewers and forward note editor imply that there has never been a (single) book of its kind covering the vast topic of water chemistry for brewers - at least not in recent times, in English or with the requisite technical depth for professional brewers. Well they all missed a big fish here (I add the same levity they do in using water terms in a humorous way to open up their topics). I refer to the title: Water in Brewing in the European Brewery Convention Manual of Good Practice Series. 2001 Fachverlag Hans Carl ISBN 3-418-00778-3. With no mention of this book in Palmer and Kaminski's work it's a huge oversight on their part. (Furthermore there are other treatises on brewing water treatment as published conference proceedings out there also not referenced by Palmer and Kaminski. So they missed a lot of crucial literature along the way). That being said and, while there is a lot of overlap in coverage of topics in the two volumes discussed here, the new work has brought together a stellar amount of material and reduced it to a level that will - after some effort (it ain't that easy folks to understand this topic - muddy waters always for all of us here) be amenable to novice chemists and will help more brewers understand the calculations that may help them make better beer.

The book covers the usual waves of information - how to read a water report and the importance of the presence or absence of each mineral ion and many organic components (the latter well covered in the EBC manual also). Alkalinity calculations (the hardest shell to crack here for most non water chemists and mired in pre-calculator history and semantics) are detailed and related in-depth to mash chemistry. The topic was likely based on the stellar (and scattered) works of A.J. deLange who clearly assisted the authors in their own understanding here; numerous graphs and tables abound - though readers will still need to pour over them if they truly want to be able to get a grip on the topic and put the material to good use.

Up front the team tell us it is not just about emulating world class brewing style waters which is a bit odd as they then spend a good deal of the book illustrating water chemistry concepts by doing just that. Though again they do provide worked examples (that were seen in the odd journal or magazine article or brewing course here and there and in German treatises) that will be a boon to the reader. And a great basic math and chemistry refresher course for all of us. Towards the end brewery water utilities and processing along with the topic of wastewater are covered (as they are in the EBC Manual!) using some illustrations and examples from current craft breweries which is quite nice.

The book comes then with a wealth of information in one concise volume. (I still need to review and check through the calculations - water chemistry being is as difficult for me to comprehend and retain as working knowledge as for any other reader of this new volume.) Moreover, it comes at a price well less than the EBC Manuals of good practice, though I recommend anyone really serious about wading through the waters in the Palmer and Kaminski and deLange book to have the EBC Manual also on hand to add the final chapter in understanding the four key ingredients in making good beer. We should welcome the addition of this new book and thank the authors for getting to grips with a very complex subject in an admirable way. Set aside a good few hours to really digest this book's content. Be patient or it too will sit unused on many shelves as most of the other books on brewing water over the course of history tend to do (even the German language treatises). As mentioned in the header this book will be useful to all beverage manufacturers - soft drinks and alcoholic types - beer, wine and distilled spirits as already noted by one distiller in the review section here at Amazon.

The Beautiful Mystery: A Chief Inspector Gamache Novel, by Louise Penny

The brilliant new novel in the New York Times bestselling series by Louise Penny, one of the most acclaimed crime writers of our time

No outsiders are ever admitted to the monastery of Saint-Gilbert-Entre-les-Loups, hidden deep in the wilderness of Quebec, where two dozen cloistered monks live in peace and prayer. They grow vegetables, they tend chickens, they make chocolate. And they sing. Ironically, for a community that has taken a vow of silence, the monks have become world-famous for their glorious voices, raised in ancient chants whose effect on both singer and listener is so profound it is known as "the beautiful mystery."

But when the renowned choir director is murdered, the lock on the monastery's massive wooden door is drawn back to admit Chief Inspector Armand Gamache and Jean-Guy Beauvoir of the Sûreté du Québec. There they discover disquiet beneath the silence, discord in the apparent harmony. One of the brothers, in this life of prayer and contemplation, has been contemplating murder. As the peace of the monastery crumbles, Gamache is forced to confront some of his own demons, as well as those roaming the remote corridors. Before finding the killer, before restoring peace, the Chief must first consider the divine, the human, and the cracks in between.

The Beautiful Mystery is the winner of the 2012 Agatha Award for best novel, the 2013 Anthony Award for best novel and the 2013 Macavity Award for best novel.

“With enormous empathy for the troubled human soul--and an ending that makes your blood race and your heart break--Penny continues to raise the bar of her splendid series.”
―People Magazine (4 out 4 stars)

“Penny writes with grace and intelligence about complex people struggling with complex emotions. But her great gift is her uncanny ability to describe what might seem indescribable – the play of light, the sound of celestial music, a quiet sense of peace.”
―Marilyn Stasio, New York Times Book Review

“Gorgeous writing…fresh and fully realized.”
―The Washington Post

“For the reader, meanwhile, there's a final beautiful mystery to contemplate: How does Penny consistently write such luminous and compassionate books?”
―The Seattle Times

“It’s a stirring, thought- provoking read, less a matter of whodunit than a relentless questioning of why any of us do anything. The Beautiful Mystery satisfies as a mystery, and stands as a powerful literary novel in its own right, regardless of whether one has read the previous seven novels in the series.”
―Margaret Cannon, The Globe and Mail

“Penny, the author, meets the challenge of setting a death in an utterly exotic location and then making the mystery and investigation just as enthralling. Never mind the side plot, a romance between the detective and his boss's daughter that seems too perfect to believe. This is mystery writing at its best, a novel in which everything – the crime, the characters, the setting, the plot – pulls the reader to the final pages.”
―Christian Science Monitor

“Penny shows us the joy of the cloistered life as surely as she has shown us the joy of village life…for fans of the series, the resulting bombshell in the characters’ lives is as much like murder as anything ever delivered by a blunt instrument.”
―The Charlotte Observer and Raleigh News & Observer (Salem Macknee)

“Powerful… the road to the finale is the stuff of grand suspense.”
―Toronto Star

“With The Beautiful Mystery, there's no longer any doubt: Penny is Canada's best contemporary crime writer, among the best in the world, and one of our best writers, period.”
―Winnipeg Free Press

“Penny ― who melds prose at once expressive and restrained with a keen understanding of human emotions ― creates a novel that earns its title, a book that shines with the grace and compassion that stamp her work.”
―Richmond Times Dispatch

“If it’s possible for Penny to outdo herself, she has accomplished it…In The Beautiful Mystery, she casts the meditative spell of Plainchant on the human spirit. With riveting suspense to the very last paragraph, Penny weaves a deepening web of intrigue as the two men battle their inner demons in the cloistered community, while the all-too-worldly politics of the religious community penetrates even the deep forests of Quebec Province.”
―BookReporter

“Gamache and Beauvoir play off one another brilliantly, offering a stirring point/counterpoint with regard to the spiritual and secular issues that have become such an element of modern life.”
―BookPage, Top Pick in Mystery

“Louise Penny has crafted an almost perfect crime―haunting, puzzling, brilliant and indeed a most beautiful mystery. Chief Inspector Gamache is one of my favorite characters in fiction. Here he must penetrate a cloistered monastery deep in the northern woods of Quebec, where a murdered monk is his ticket to get in. This is a tour-de-force for Penny, and a thrilling, intelligent read.”
―Linda Fairstein

“A. Ma. Zing! A remarkably courageous―and very beautiful―book that leaps the abyss between faith and despair.”
―Diana Gabaldon

“Elliptical and often oracular… also remarkably penetrating and humane. The most illuminating analogies are not to other contemporary detective fiction but to The Name of the Rose and Murder in the Cathedral.”
―Kirkus Reviews

“An entire mystery novel centering on Gregorian chants (whose curiously hypnotic allure is called the "beautiful mystery")? Yes, indeed, and in the hands of the masterful Penny, the topic proves every bit as able to transfix readers as the chants do their listeners.”
―Booklist (starred review)

“Elegant… This heart-rending tale is a marvelous addition to Penny's acclaimed series. Fans won't be disappointed.”
―Library Journal (starred review)

“Traditional mystery fans can look forward to a captivating whodunit plot, a clever fair-play clue concealed in plain view, and the deft use of humor to lighten the story's dark patches. On a deeper level, the crime provides a means for Penny's unusually empathic, all-too-fallible lead to unearth truths about human passions and weaknesses while avoiding simple answers.”
―Publishers Weekly (starred review)

THE BEAUTIFUL MYSTERY (Chapter 1)

As the last note of the chant escaped the Blessed Chapel a great silence fell, and with it came an even greater disquiet.

The silence stretched on. And on.

These were men used to silence, but this seemed extreme, even to them.

And still they stood in their long black robes and white tops, motionless.

Waiting.

These were men also used to waiting. But this too seemed extreme.

The less disciplined among them stole glances at the tall, slim, elderly man who had been the last to file in and would be the first to leave.

Dom Philippe kept his eyes closed. Where once this was a moment of profound peace, a private moment with his private God, when Vigils had ended and before he signaled for the Angelus, now it was simply escape.

He closed his eyes because he didn’t want to see.

Besides, he knew what was there. What was always there. What had been there for hundreds of years before he arrived and would, God willing, be there for centuries after he was buried in the cemetery. Two rows of men across from him, in black robes with white hoods, a simple rope tied at their waists.

And beside him to his right, two more rows of men.

They were facing each other across the stone floor of the chapel, like ancient battle lines.

No, he told his weary mind. No. I mustn’t think of this as a battle, or a war. Just opposing points of view. Expressed in a healthy community.

Then why was he so reluctant to open his eyes? To get the day going?

To signal the great bells that would ring the Angelus to the forests and birds and lakes and fish. And the monks. To the angels and all the saints. And God.

A throat cleared.

In the great silence it sounded like a bomb. And to the abbot’s ears it sounded like what it was.

A challenge.

With an effort he continued to keep his eyes closed. He remained still, and quiet. But there was no peace anymore. Now there was only turmoil, inside and out. He could feel it, vibrating from and between the two rows of waiting men.

He could feel it vibrating within him.

Dom Philippe counted to one hundred. Slowly. Then opening his blue eyes, he stared directly across the chapel, to the short, round man who stood with his eyes open, his hands folded on his stomach, a small smile on his endlessly patient face.

The abbot’s eyes narrowed slightly, in a glare, then he recovered and raising his slim right hand, he signaled. And the bells began.

The perfect, round, rich toll left the bell tower and took off into the early morning darkness. It skimmed over the clear lake, the forests, the rolling hills. To be heard by all sorts of creatures.

And twenty-four men, in a remote monastery in Québec.

A clarion call. Their day had begun.

“You’re not serious,” laughed Jean-Guy Beauvoir.

“I am,” nodded Annie. “I swear to God it’s the truth.”

“Are you telling me,” he picked up another piece of maple-cured bacon from the platter, “that your father gave your mother a bathmat as a gift when they first started dating?”

“No, no. That would be ridiculous.”

“Sure would,” he agreed and ate the bacon in two big bites. In the background an old Beau Dommage album was playing. “La complainte du phoque en Alaska.” About a lonely seal whose love had disappeared. Beauvoir hummed quietly to the familiar tune.

“He gave it to my grandmother the first time they met, as a hostess gift, thanking her for inviting him to dinner.”

Beauvoir laughed. “He never told me that,” he finally managed.

“Well, Dad doesn’t exactly mention it in polite conversation. Poor Mom. Felt she had to marry him. After all, who else would have him?”

Beauvoir laughed again. “So I guess the bar is set pretty low. I could hardly give you a worse gift.”

He reached down beside the table in the sunny kitchen. They’d made breakfast together that Saturday morning. A platter of bacon and scrambled eggs with melted Brie sat on the small pine table. He’d thrown on a sweater this early autumn day and gone around the corner from Annie’s apartment to the bakery on rue St-Denis for croissants and pain au chocolat. Then Jean-Guy had wandered in and out of the local shops, picking up a couple of cafés, the Montréal weekend papers, and something else.

“What’ve you got there?” Annie Gamache asked, leaning across the table. The cat leapt to the ground and found a spot on the floor where the sun hit.

“Nothing,” he grinned. “Just a little je ne sais quoi I saw, and thought of you.”

Beauvoir lifted it into plain sight.

“You asshole,” Annie said, and laughed. “It’s a toilet plunger.”

“With a bow on it,” said Beauvoir. “Just for you, ma chère. We’ve been together for three months. Happy anniversary.”

“Of course, the toilet plunger anniversary. And I got you nothing.”

“I forgive you,” he said.

Annie took the plunger. “I’ll think of you every time I use it. Though I think you’ll be the one using it most of the time. You are full of it, after all.”

“Too kind,” said Beauvoir, ducking his head in a small bow.

She thrust the plunger forward, gently prodding him with the red rubber suction cup as though it was a rapier and she the swordsman.

Beauvoir smiled and took a sip of his rich, aromatic café. So like Annie. Where other women might have pretended the ridiculous plunger was a wand, she pretended it was a sword.

Of course, Jean-Guy realized, he would never have given a toilet plunger to any other woman. Only Annie.

“You lied to me,” she said, sitting back down. “Dad obviously told you about the bathmat.”

“He did,” admitted Beauvoir. “We were in Gaspé, in a poacher’s cabin, searching for evidence when your father opened a closet and found not one but two brand-new bathmats, still in their wrapping.”

As he spoke he looked at Annie. Her eyes never left him, barely blinked. She took in every word, every gesture, every inflection. Enid, his ex-wife, had also listened. But there was always an edge of desperation about it, a demand. As though he owed her. As though she was dying and he was the medicine.

Enid left him drained, and yet still feeling inadequate.

But Annie was gentler. More generous.

Like her father, she listened carefully and quietly.

With Enid he never talked about his work, and she never asked. With Annie he told her everything.

Now, while putting strawberry confiture on the warm croissant, he told her about the poacher’s cabin, about the case, the savage murder of a family. He told her what they found, how they felt, and who they arrested.

“The bathmats turned out to be the key pieces of evidence,” said Beauvoir, lifting the croissant to his mouth. “Though it took us a long time to figure it out.”

“Is that when Dad told you about his own sad history with bathmats?”

Beauvoir nodded and chewed and saw the Chief Inspector in the dim cabin. Whispering the story. They weren’t sure when the poacher would return, and they didn’t want to be caught there. They had a search warrant, but they didn’t want him to know that. So as the two homicide investigators deftly searched, Chief Inspector Gamache had told Beauvoir about the bathmat. Of showing up for one of the most important meals of his life, desperate to impress the parents of the woman he’d fallen hopelessly in love with. And somehow deciding a bathmat was the perfect hostess gift.

“How could you have thought that, sir?” Beauvoir had whispered, glancing out the cracked and cobwebbed window, hoping not to see the shabby poacher returning with his kill.

“Well, now,” Gamache had paused, obviously trying to recall his own thinking. “Madame Gamache often asks the same question. Her mother never tired of asking either. Her father, on the other hand, decided I was an imbecile and never mentioned it again. That was worse. When they died we found the bathmat in their linen closet, still in its plastic wrapping, with the card attached.”

Beauvoir stopped talking and looked across at Annie. Her hair was still damp from the shower they’d shared. She smelled fresh and clean. Like a citron grove in the warm sunshine. No makeup. She wore warm slippers and loose, comfortable clothing. Annie was aware of fashion, and happy to be fashionable. But happier to be comfortable.

She was not slim. She was not a stunning beauty. Annie Gamache was none of the things he’d always found attractive in a woman. But Annie knew something most people never learn. She knew how great it was to be alive.

It had taken him almost forty years, but Jean-Guy Beauvoir finally understood it too. And knew now there was no greater beauty.

Annie was approaching thirty now. She’d been a gawky teenager when they’d first met. When the Chief Inspector had brought Beauvoir into his homicide division at the Sûreté du Québec. Of the hundreds of agents and inspectors under the Chief’s command, he’d chosen this young, brash agent no one else had wanted as his second in command.

Had made him part of the team, and eventually, over the years, part of the family.

Though even the Chief Inspector had no idea how much a part of the family Beauvoir had become.

“Well,” said Annie with a wry smile, “now we have our own bathroom story to baffle our children with. When we die they’ll find this, and wonder.”

She held up the plunger, with its cheery red bow.

First, but not the last...
By Jill Meyer
"The Beautiful Mystery" by Louise Penny is Penny's first book I've read, but it surely won't be the last. It is one of the best written, almost lyrical stories I've read in a long time. Yes, "The Beautiful Mystery" is part of a series of seven previous books starring Armand Gamache, but the book is an excellent novel that transcends its "police procedural" designation and becomes simply a beautifully written novel.

Set in Montreal, Surete Chief Inspector Armand Gamache is sent, along with his aide, Jean-Guy Beauvoir, to a monastery hidden away in the hills and forests well outside the city. A monk has been found murdered in the garden and the head of the monastery - Dom Philippe - has reluctantly sent for the Surete to investigate the murder. But this is no ordinary monastery; the 24 monks living within have taken vows of silence and express their religion through their beautiful Gregorian chants. They had recorded their chants on a CD from which they hoped to earn a modest amount of money to fix up their dilapidated building. The order - the Gilbertines - was actually a renegade religious order who had fled England for Canada 400 years before. (The reader can learn an awful lot of history by reading this book.) But the CD of chants had struck a chord outside the monastery walls and had become a world-wide best-seller. Suddenly a previously obscure bunch of monks were famous for their singing and money, a by-product of their success, had become an issue in the congregation. There was division as the leaders couldn't decide whether or not to seize their success and record another CD of beautiful, spectral music.

But if the Gilbertine monks were caught up in power struggles, so were the members of the Surete sent to work the case. Louise Penny updates the feuds and battles within the upper ranks of the police organisation she had previously written about in her series. For someone like me, who hadn't read the previous novels, Penny was able to strike the right note of filling in the back story without boring those who already knew what had come before.

Penny's novel becomes almost like the beautiful and heavenly Gregorian chants as she combines different plot points and characters to tell a nuanced story that rivals the chants in their intricacy. There's not a false move in her writing and the novel is compelling reading. As I wrote at the beginning, this is my first Louise Penny novel, but it sure won't be my last!

Expectations were too high
By eve
Although I am a huge Louise Penny fan and have eagerly awaited each new arrival, I must confess I was a bit disappointed with this one. I found the ending melodramatic and Beauvoir's actions near the end simply unbelievable. I wish she would bring the factory raid chapter to a close and let these characters get on with their lives.

Not her best
By Dr Crone
I've loved Louise Penny's Inspector Gamache books, but this one -- yet another variant on the classic closed room or closed site story -- seems to be stretching Gamache's history with internal Surete politics and a traumatic raid out too far. It also reads as if someone told her it would punch things up to use more sentence fragments, which I just found irritating. I like her creation of a lost religious order, the references to Gregorian chant, amd the strong visual sense of the locked monastery. I will of course continue to read the Gamache books as soon as they come out (Kindle book preorders are the ultimate instant gratification!) but I hope the next one puts some old history to bed and ditches the pseudo-journalistic style. Clearly there will be more of these, because the last chapter seems constructed to pack in as many cliff hangers as possible, short of an actual cliff.
