The title of this book may suggest that it is designed as a latter-day Gradus ad Parnassum to teach aspiring writers to produce passable verses. It is not. It is intended to help aspiring readers deepen their sensitivity to the rhythmical and formal properties of poetry and thus heighten their pleasure and illumination as an appropriately skilled audience of an exacting art.

About the Author
Paul Fussell, critic, essayist, and cultural commentator, has recently won the H. L. Mencken Award of the Free Press Association. Among his books are "The Great War and Modem Memory, " which in 1976 won both the National Book Critics Circle Award and the National Book Award; "Abroad: British Literary Traveling Between the Wars; Wartime: Understanding and Behavior in the Second World War;" and, most recently, "BAD or, The Dumbing of America." His essays have been collected in "The Boy Scout Handbook and Other Observations" and "Thank God for the Atom Bomb and Other Essays." He lives in Philadelphia, where he teaches English at the University of Pennsylvania.

Fussell's foreword says that his book is for aspiring readers, not aspiring writers. But if you are an aspiring poet, I think Fussell has something to offer that is absent in most "handbooks".

One of the most important things Fussell addresses is how the form of a poem affects the meaning and impression of the total poem. For example, he notes how many poetic forms are inevitably coloured by their initial or most famous use. He says regarding Tennyson's In Memoriam stanza-form, that it "is now so closely associated with the sturdy, serviceable elegaic atmosphere of In Memoriam itself that...its uses now seem limited to occasions which either resemble or mock the original" (Ch 8 The English Stanzas).

Another chapter that poets will find helpful is Metrical Variations, in which Fussell examines how poets substitute variant feet to create particular effects. Or if your interest is in free verse, he devotes a chapter to examining the characteristics of successful free verse, including how line breaks create effects.

This is not a substitute for a general handbook of poetry, and assumes a minimal knowledge of poetic technique, meter, &c. But if you are serious about reading or writing poetry, I don't think you can afford to miss this book.

Not for the neophyte, but a tremendous study

When I was 21 and in my first year of graduate school, Paul Fussell's "Poetic Meter and Poetic Form" was one of the first text books assigned to me. When I bought the book and saw how slim it was, I snickered, "Grad school's gonna be a walk in the park!"

Yeah, RIGHT!

This densely packed tome is not for the uninitiated and definitely not absorbed in just one reading. On and off, over the last 20 years, I have come back to this book to refresh my memory and, usually, to astonish myself. The book's real strength, besides Professor Fussell's obvious command of his subject, and his ability to convey that command, is in the sprinkling of dozens of anecdotes by and about poets about other poets and poetry. Even at this late date in my life, I can't pretend to understand the entire book but what I do understand I admire and respect. "Poetic Meter and Poetic Form" is not recommended to anyone studying poetry; it is urgently required.

This book is a classic of prosodic exposition. (And understand, when I call a book a classic, I am not just lapsing into a cliche; it really IS a classic.) Fussell shows us the relations between form and content, between rhyme and rhythm on the one hand and the function of these formal devices to illuminate meaning on the other. The book also devotes a chapter to empirical observations on the properties of free verse, and it includes a concise bibliography of other works on prosody. Highly recommended.

Nothing else like it for Human Resources job candidates!

This book is essential for newbies, managers, directors and executives in HR who want to change jobs. Practical and very comprehensive. Getting a job in HR has changed dramatically in recent years. It's a whole lot tougher and much more competitive. However, you still need to present a well thought out and persuasive resume before any employer will even talk to you. And this book shows you a ton of different ways of doing that successfully and getting interviews. Also, in the old days, resumes were looked at by people, not computers. This book really opened my eyes as to what I needed to do both online and offline to best position my credentials, win the battle with computerized screening and get recruiters and hiring executives interested. The book is loaded with HR case studies and sample resumes that are easy to understand and are right on the money too.

I highly recommend it!

A book for the professional bread baker.

This book is an excelient book for both professional and student bakers. Not only does the book introduce the basics of bread baking, it also goes into the chemistry aspects of baking. This wonderful book offers a number of fasinating pictures that show many diffrent folds, rolls and techniques of developing dough. I highly recomend this book for someone who is interested in becoming a professional baker like myself.

Professional Bread Baker Master Class

If you are a seasoned bread baker, manager or owner of a small neighborhood bakery, this book is a must-have. It has hard to find information that will be extremely useful to you. This book is a valuable reference for professionals.

The first 30 pages is formal information on bread making techniques and ingredients in the professional bakery (e.g. base temperature calculations).

It has almost 50 recipes for specialty and flavored bread. These are extremely profitable, as they represent bread you can charge more for. If you are already doing standard breads, you should be able to do all the breads in this section without any additional difficulty. In addition, they will allow you to present good variety to your customers. The recipes are geared for about a dozen loaves, just about right for a neighborhood bakery.

It presents about 2 dozen different bread shapes that you can mostly apply to breads you are already making.

The second half of the book is devoted to bread sculpture, for those who feel artistic or who need a start for a professional competition.

A phenomenal book!

This book is absolutely amazing, although it is geared towards the professional baker. There are great photographs of some of the decorative pieces, as well as helpful charts and tables. There are recipes for a number of unusual breads, as well as how to form animals, letters, woven bread baskets, wagons, and many other unusual and impressive breads. This is a great book for anyone interested in the nitty-gritty on bread-making and bread-shaping.

About the Author
Jesmyn Ward received her M.F.A. from the University of Michigan and is currently an associate professor of creative writing at Tulane University. She is the editor of the anthology The Fire This Time and the author of the novels Where the Line Bleeds and Salvage the Bones, the latter of which won the 2011 National Book Award and was a finalist for the Dayton Literary Peace Prize. Ward lives in DeLisle, Mississippi.

This book changed my life.

I purchased Men We Reaped after a riveting hour-long interview Jesmyn Ward gave to NPR radio stung me with anticipation.

The book changed my life.

Ward takes you back and forth through time seamlessly, on a journey to uncover meaning behind the deaths of five men in her life. Along the way I played devil's advocate in my head. As the answers begin to appear through the Louisiana fog, I looked for 'holes' in the theory. I found no valid reasons why a critic might dismiss her case.

That's just one of the themes. There are others, but simply listing them here in a sentence would be an injustice. Ward weaves them into the memoir using the very personal thread of her own life story. Technically, the writing is a virtuoso; I found myself re-reading paragraphs and wondering, 'How did she just do that?' Emotionally, it is raw electricity.

Simply put, everyone needs to read this book. It is too important not to.

An intimate peek into sometimes tragic lives of Southern Black men

The author's powers of description are strongly engaging, and the stories she tells of life on the Mississippi Gulf Coast are fascinating, if somewhat depressing. Her narrative, however, is occasionally disjointed so that the reader struggles to keep track of chronology. Being a Mississippian, I was especially drawn to her stories of love and tragic loss and and her intimate descriptions of those parts of the lives of Black Southerners not usually seen by White people.

How we see ourselves

This is a beautifully written memoir. The author speaks of how she used words and literature to escape the bleakness of her life, and her skill with them is evident. She fleshed out her characters, giving us a glimpse into the lives of all these young men close to her who died. This is really a collection of eulogies. What struck me most was her analysis that all the self-destructive behaviors described were rooted in feelings of worthlessness and inadequacy; of never being good enough. If there is any key to resiliency it may lie in preventing those feelings from taking root.While many of her experiences were clearly unique to growing up black in rural Mississippi, some of those experiences are generational. People in their thirties and under are likely to have lost far more friends at a young age to suicide, drugs, and other violence than their parents' generation experienced--excluding war casualties. Racism is a problem, obviously, but not the sole explanation.

Not Good On Kindle - Don't buy the Kindle version!

First the book is fine, the content is fine. - My objection is for the Kindle version of this book. I'm really trying to like the kindle versions of books. (I have Kindle for Mac) They just aren't working out for me. This book is filled with PICTURES of hand written TEXT - that means you can not zoom in on the kindle version and you can't see what the hand writing says.

An example of what I'm talking about can be seen if you go to the "Look Inside" section for this book and look at the hand writing on the page with the pelican heads or on the page with the leaf and rocks. Then hit the zoom out button on the browser ONE time. On my Kindle that is how small the print is. If you can read those lines the book will probably work for you. Remember you can't zoom in or out of pictures on the Kindle.

Also, just in case someone working for Amazon reads this - Seriously! it would be so easy for you guys to allow the computer to read text to speech. I drive 1.5 hours a day. It would be great to listen to my Kindle library in the car. I would buy A LOT more books and magazines through Kindle if I could do that. As it is I have only bought 3 and been frustrated with each of them.

good if you did not buy her other book

i did like this book, or the other one form the same author "Painting with Watercolor, Pen & Ink", each taken separately. However I feel a little cheated as I bought both books, and it turns out 8 out of the 11 chapters that this book contains are the same. what i mean by the same: word per word. so in a sense I paid almost $23 for three chapters...

Great Tutorial; Wonderfully Inspiring

Claudia Nice's book is everything I'd hoped and more. She starts with the basic techniques for using a pen and ink to create different effects - fur, tree bark, metallic shine, and the like, then demonstrates their use throughout the book with her illustrations. Same with watercolor. Pages are filled with gorgeous art (not a single photograph), most with notes about which technique she used and in what order, which color(s) she used and how. Some pages illustrate the two- or three-step process to complete a scene (sunrise, breaking surf) or feature (wooden shakes, stone wall, polished silver, eyes) - that's very helpful. I was so impressed with this book, I ordered her Creating Textured Landscapes with Pen and Ink and Watercolor - another great teaching tool and a wonderful companion to Creating Textures...
