While the comparative method is concerned with regularities in phonological change, grammaticalization theory deals with regularities of grammatical change. In an A-Z format, this book summarizes the most salient generalizations that have been made on the unidirectional change of grammatical forms and constructions. It thus demonstrates that grammatical change is regular and also adds to our knowledge of universal properties of human languages. Indices organized by source and target concepts allow for flexible use, and the findings delineated in the book are relevant to students of language across theoretical boundaries.

Review
'The major strength of the book lies in the extent to which the grammaticalization processes noted are supported by data from a wide variety of languages and the degree to which languages of the world show striking similarity in the evolution of their grammatical forms. To this end this text makes a profound contribution. It succeeds in showing which lexical items are related to which grammatical forms ... As a reference work, this book will prove to be a useful resource for researchers interested in cross-linguistic patterns of grammaticalization.' What a great resource! Really gives you some insight onto how languages develop and how their grammars come together. I'm a conlanger, and I think this book is an essential for anyone wanting to create a true language/grammar and not just create clones of existing languages. Excellent book.

Affordable... and great !!!
By C. Imbert
Ten years of work finally gave birth to this book. A lexicon classifying the different universals governing the process of grammaticalization, throughout 500 languages ! If you're working on grammaticalization, language typology or language universals, this is your book !
The "grammaticalization universals" are classified from Source to Target (e.g. "Leave > Egressive", that is to say the verb "leave" gave an egressive aspect or case or grammatical satellite in many languages). Each time, quotations are given in several languages and the references of the source texts are given.
At the end, an index "Source to Target" and an index "Target to Source" are included.
Also, as you may not know the genetic origin of all of the 500 languages, a final index classifies these languages alphabetically, and gives the subfamily and then the family out of which each language was born.
Readable, affordable, and very useful to improve your lists of examples and confirm your own hypothesis, if you're a linguist.
However, a sequel is expected, for not all of the "already-known" universals are included in this first volume.
